New art!!

1 min read
So I've been gone since like March of last year.  Work.  Kids.  House.  Moving.  Etc. Et-freaking-cetera!

I had gotten a bit frustrated at trying to promote getting commissions with no success.  So, I set aside the pencils for a while and was doing some airbrush work.

I got a call about 3 or 4 weeks ago from a friend in Pennsylvania (I'm in SC now) to do a portrait of his three nieces.  So, go check it out...and my other work!

I've been so busy lately, that I've let my projects fall to the way-side.  But now I'm back.

First, I wanted to say thanks to everyone who has looked at, commented on, and/or added Apnea, Natural History to their favorites.  This piece is becoming pretty popular for me.  I'm currently working on another one of her called Queen of Hearts.  It's my current WIP.  Apnea herself really liked the last one I did and I spoke with her about doing more of her and she gladly permitted me to do so.  I've recently discovered that now *she* herself is being sued by the same people who are trying to liquidate Lithium Picnic!  Bastards.  So, I've decided that if I make anything off the pieces I've done of Apnea, I'm going to donate it to Lithium Picnic/Apnea to their cause.  Viva La Lithium Picnic et Apnea!!!

So recently I did a portrait of a friend and her fiancee for their wedding.  A big one...19x24.  It was nice to finally get a commission after such a long hiatus.  I'm starting to realize that the person who coined the phrase "starving artist" wasn't just making a joke!  Anyways, the portrait turned out nice and I also did caricatures at her wedding reception!  I'm hoping I'll get some business out of it.

Keep that pencil moving!

Finally finished the Robert DeNiro - "Cape Fear" piece for the PencilPortraitArt club contest.

I was pretty excited about this.  Why not Meg Ryan, you ask?  Well, I figured the majority of everyone would be doing Meg Ryan because she is so beautiful.  I wanted to do something a bit different.  Cape Fear is one of my favorite all time movies and DeNiro played an excellent role.  I wanted something with some composition, so I found this piece on the web and went to town.  It was a bit challenging as the photo didn't have very much resolution to it so I couldn't grab a lot of detail.  So, I had to use my imagination.

Hope you like it!

Not having had *any* commissions since last September...I'm now officially bored and distraught.  I was doing pretty well for a while.  The occasional child or pet portrait...a few airbrushing jobs...and a wall mural.  Now, the local industry is pretty dry.  Probably due to rising gas prices...that or I haven't gotten my butt out and marketed myself.  So, if you're looking...I'm for hire!

Regardless, the dry industry has given me time to work on some new things.  Right now I'm working on a DeNiro piece for the PortraitPencilArt club.  Check out my gallery to see WIP's.  I'm going to peruse the photography side of dA and find a picture to draw...with permission of course.  Maybe broaden my portfolio.  I've seen some great work on here and it has inspired me to do some pieces that *I* like and not something a client wants.  I might even delve into a new medium.

Also on going...is my *other* hobby...writing.  Screenplays to be exact.  I'm working on a screenplay that hopefully, if all the stars are aligned and planets are on the correct axes, will get optioned for a feature film!  Until that day, I take joy in just being creative with words aside from pencil smudges.

All this while doing my full-time job.  I bitch a lot about wishing I could be doing something artistic for a living...but I need to step back and be grateful I have a well paying job.  I would just rather be doing something else.  I don't have the guts to leave my job security and great pay to take a chance on just art.  I can't seem to get a commission lately and there's a reason the phrase "starving artist" was coined.

And that's where I'm at...
